Rhino in a hut

Hartebeests
So yesterday they didn't find our lion. I did lots of work in the office. Preparing my hartebeest project, writing up the report on the elephant we looked at, and other bits and bobs. In the afternoon I asked Methenge to drive me to the hartebeests on lewa that I will hopefully be studying. There are 11. 11. They are not doing to well here, I'm hoping to try and figure out why. I spotted them which was a feat as it took about an hour of driving to find them.  We then helped a couple who had gotten their car stuck.  On the way back we saw a herd of elephant.  There was a baby who was no more than a week old. So sweet!

Just As we were getting back from camp I saw a giraffe running towards our car. I immediately became aware that there was a predator about. The. The herd of grevys took off. We went to investigate and I spotted the predator.  A group of 4 cheetah. A mum and her 3 older cubs.  We stayed and watched them until they left.  They are such beautiful creatures.

Last night was relaxing. But this morning on my walk past my gazelles, I got a call saying to get to the road as they were coming to get me.  A rhino was limping.  This is Elvis the black rhino that was an orphan.  He was found lame this morning.  We drove to him, about 30 minutes away.  We find him.  He had squeezed himself into the gate guards metal hut. It looked like a dog in a dog house. There was much laughing seeing this massive beast in a hut.  We examined him as best as we could and didn't see any wounds.  He was so calm, just trying to take a nap.  We debated immobilizing him, but the picture of him running across lewa with a hut on him made us laugh even further.  We also debated trying to give him meds as he napped.  This was said more of as a joke.  He was not going to come out of the hut for us.  Since he was seen yesterday and he was not limping then, we decided to wait and see if maybe he twisted his ankle so to say.  We will see what comes tomorrow.

Now we are off to go and see the crocodile in samburu.  He is in good form, just moved into a spring at a ranch where people usually swim. We are going to see about relocating him before he causes trouble.  After that we head back to ol pejeta to try and find the lion for ourselves. Supposedly he is hurt, so we do need to see him.

Other fun bits this am included morning traffic on the way back from Elvis.  By traffic I mean 100 goats and sheep (shoats).  Ian, the rhino guy hopped out and was running them off, but it appeared he was just clicking his heels like an Irish dancer.

It's well here. I promise to send some pictures when I have a minute.  I am probably staying in nanyuki tonight. As we might not be able to make it back to lewa in time.

Morning traffic….
